How to Achieve Goals: Are You Spinning Your Wheels?

| |

By April Ladrey

Do you ask yourself what your full potential is? Do you feel like you are falling short of where you should be and feel frustrated most of the time with where you are at in life? And the thing is, you know you are smart and you know you have and can develop your skills.

This may sound like it is describing you, but don't fret because you are not alone. Millions of people in the U.S. and around the world have a hard time setting and achieving goals, so don't be too hard on yourself. We can examine how successful people actually set and reach their goals.

You are able to learn how to reach your goals. Your life can change if you can learn and nurture new habits. To become the successful person you deserve to be, you must make goal setting a habit -- a way of life.

Not all the difficulties you are having right now will stem from ineffective goal setting, but most of them may if you take the time to examine where your dissatisfaction comes from. And even if it sounds simple, the problem can be solved if you learn how to achieve your goals and "walk the walk" instead of just "talk the talk".

Take someone who's having trouble with their finances. They've been meaning to address it for some time, but they just never have gotten around to it. So months after they first notice the problem, they're still in the same boat, wondering why.

If you can figure out how you want your life to be different, then you can make path from where you are now to where (and how) you want to be. Write this down, be descriptive. Then write out each step you will have to take to get you to your goal. Make smaller steps if one step seems to much for you to do.

A specific time frame is also important to achieve your goals. Goal-oriented people do not just set a time line for their ultimate goal, they also set a time frame for each individual step they have to take to reach their goal. For example, write down "July 30th, 2011" instead of "Summer 2011".

As stated above, goal setting is a skill and can develop into a habit. If you take the time to do these two steps and apply them to one area of your life, you are on your way of taking charge of your life.
