Working With Website Design And Search Engine Optimization

| |

By Chris Channing

Web designers today are now being trained with much more knowledge in Internet marketing and the sort, since clients are always looking to get as high up on search engines as possible. The process of optimizing a website starts at the design process, where choices are made on how a website is going to be built from the ground up, and how it will expand in the future.

Meta tags were once one of the biggest deciding factors in search engine optimization. These days, they aren't as popular, but are still necessary in telling search engines what the website is about. Meta tags include title, description, and keyword tags that all should be filled out. Webmasters may see changes in how search engines display their listings because of this.

Heading tags are used to separate and organize information. A heading functions much like it would in a newspaper, where a bold heading is followed by an article of some sort, sometimes with subheadings in the mixture. Using this tool properly is the goal, since too many headings will be seen as a poor design choice on Google's part.

After a web design is complete, a designer should always be held accountable in how well it performs in different web browsers. This also brings up the point that all designs should be validated against strict rules and standards, so as to ensure that a website has the highest chance possible to be rendered correctly for anyone trying to view it. It also helps search engines read content easier, which can keep a website running strong.

Alternate text is another tool to use when linking to other content, or even when putting images into a website. Alternative text is what is displayed when a mouse hovers over a link or an image. This is usually used to help the reader understand what they are interfacing with, but is also read by search engines to help tag content in a website and to determine the overall subject being discussed.

A newer aspect to consider is the sitemap. A sitemap is basically an index page that lists all of the pages that a reader can see. It is primarily for search engines, however, as it can update to show new pages and let search engines know when they should look for new content. This is much easier than letting nature take its course and getting recognition months down the road instead of days.

Search engine optimization is a long subject to get familiarized with. It's recommended that these tips be followed before going forth with other search engine optimization methods, such as link building. In the end, work the best you can and your hard efforts will pay off with recognition.
